Through times… (2015)

I recently went to my grandmother’s village called Madhuramangalam, almost 80 kms from Chennai and very near to Sri Perumbudur. My grandmother and her siblings grew up in a house in the agraharam (traditionally, four streets surrounding a village temple almost always occupied by Brahmins) near the temple. The last time I visited this temple and the village was almost 15 years ago when my grandmother was alive, and her family still owned their ancestral home and lands in the village. It was odd to walk past the home, still standing and occupied by a family, and it must have been odder for my grandmother’s brother, an octogenarian accompanying us.

The temple’s main deity is Embar (Govinda Jeeyar), brother of Sri Ramanuja. The temple is at least 1100 years old. More information can be found here.
